What is Virginia’s House?
Virginia’s House is a non-profit organization governed by a local board of directors. Virginia’s House mission is to meet the needs of abused, neglected and traumatized children through programs of prevention, advocacy and support. Virginia’s House consists of four programs: Children’s Advocacy Center, Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA), Victim’s Advocacy and Mentor Program.
What is a Children’s Advocacy Center (CAC)?
Our Children’s Advocacy Center believes in the power of a multidisciplinary team approach to the intervention, investigation and prosecution of child abuse cases. We work as a team with Child Protective Services, Law Enforcement, Medical Personnel, Mental Health Professionals, Juvenile Probation, the County Attorney and the District Attorney to provide justice and healing for child victims.
Who does the CAC serve?
The CAC serves sexually and physically abused children under the age of 17 who are referred by law enforcement or Child Protective Services.
How are children referred to the CAC?
Children are primarily referred through the two agencies that are mandated to receive reports of child abuse: Child Protective Services and Law Enforcement.
What is a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA)?
When a child goes into foster care due to abuse or neglect, a judge may appoint a committed volunteer called a CASA to advocate in court and in the community for that child. The volunteer’s focus is on that child, giving hope and help in guiding the child to a safe, permanent home.
What is Victim’s Advocacy?
Victim’s Advocacy provides assistance and support to victims and non-offending family members. Assistance and support consists of Crime Victim’s Compensation, Information and Referral, Crisis Counseling, Court Accompaniment, Legal Advocacy and Medical Advocacy.
What is the Mentor Program?
Mentor’s provide a vital role in helping young children and youth to have a positive and encouraging adult in their lives. A Mentor is a volunteer from our community that meets with a student once a week during school on campus.
How are children referred to the Mentor Program?
Children are referred by school staff at the beginning of each school year.
